The 15 most common job interview questions (and how to answer them)

A well-prepared interview shows. It’s not about memorizing answers, but about having your ideas clear so you don’t freeze. Most interviews repeat a handful of questions: if you work on them beforehand, you’ll arrive with confidence. Here are the 15 most frequent ones and how to tackle them.
The STAR method: your best ally
Before the questions, learn this technique to answer anything about your experience:
- Situation: the context (“At my previous job we had constant delays…”).
- Task: your responsibility (“I was asked to reduce those times…”).
- Action: what you did (“I reorganized the workflow and automated two steps…”).
- Result: the outcome, with numbers if you can (“We cut delays by 60%”).
Tell concrete stories with this framework and you’ll sound prepared and credible.
Questions about you
1. Tell me about yourself. Don’t tell your life story: in a minute, summarize who you are professionally, your key experience and why you fit the role.
2. What are your strengths? Pick two or three relevant to the role and back them with a short example.
3. What’s your biggest weakness? Mention a real but non-critical weakness, and above all what you’re doing to improve it. Avoid the “I’m a perfectionist” cliché.
4. Where do you see yourself in five years? Show realistic ambition aligned with the company. Don’t say “in your job” or “I don’t know.”
Questions about the job
5. Why do you want to work here? This is where it shows who researched the company. Mention something specific: their product, their values, a recent project.
6. Why did you leave (or want to leave) your current job? Be honest but positive. Never badmouth your former boss or company; focus on what you’re looking for ahead.
7. What do you know about us? Have one or two sentences ready about what they do and what sets them apart.
8. Why should we hire you? Connect your strengths to the role’s needs. This is your moment to sell your value proposition.
Questions about your experience
9. Tell me about an achievement you’re proud of. Use STAR. Pick something measurable and relevant.
10. Describe a workplace conflict and how you resolved it. They want to see maturity. Show how you listened, sought a solution and what you learned.
11. How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines? Give a real example of how you organized yourself under pressure.
12. Tell me about a time you failed. Don’t dodge it: pick a real mistake, own your part and explain what you changed afterward.
Closing questions
13. What are your salary expectations? Research the market range for that role and country beforehand. Give a range rather than an exact figure and show you’re open to negotiate.
14. Do you have any questions for us? Never say no. Ask about the team, the challenges of the role or how success is measured. Show interest.
15. When could you start? Be clear about your real availability, considering the notice you owe at your current job.
Final tips
- Research the company the day before: website, socials, recent news.
- Prepare your setup if it’s a virtual interview: good light, stable connection, tidy background.
- Arrive on time (or connect five minutes early).
- Bring questions and, if relevant, examples of your work.
- Follow up: a short thank-you email afterward leaves a good impression.
Practice reduces nerves. Rehearse out loud or with someone you trust. And remember: every interview, whatever the outcome, prepares you better for the next. At RápidoEmpleo you’ll find new jobs every day to keep applying and landing those interviews.
